Celebrating April 2024 Artist of the Month: Joseph Smith

We are thrilled to spotlight Joseph Smith as our Artist of the Month for April 2024 at the Parker River Wildlife Refuge. Hailing from southern Maine, Joseph has cultivated a profound connection with the landscapes of New England, capturing its essence through his exceptional photography.

A Maryland native with years spent in San Diego, Joseph’s photographic journey began with family portraits. It was the allure of the Southwest’s landscapes that truly awakened his artistic spirit. Today, Joseph’s work is a testament to his versatility and passion for the art form, focusing on the stunning scenery of New England. From the serene forests and fields to the vibrant coastlines and historic farms, his black and white photographs reveal a deep appreciation for nature’s diverse beauty.

Joseph’s philosophy as “a photographic omnivore” reflects in his work, showcasing an equal fascination for the simplicity of an empty beach and the intricate details of an abandoned mill. His dedication to printing much of his own work adds a personal touch to each piece, inviting viewers to share in his intimate perspective of the world.

We invite you to experience Joseph Smith’s captivating photography at the Parker River Visitor Center throughout April. Don’t miss the chance to immerse yourself in the unique vision of one of southern Maine’s most talented photographers.
