Join Us for a Fall Beach Cleanup and Trail Maintenance at Parker River National Wildlife Refuge!

Are you looking to volunteer and make a tangible impact on our beautiful natural refuge? Mark your calendar for the Fall Beach Cleanup at Parker River National Wildlife Refuge on Saturday, September 30, 2023, from 9 AM to 3 PM!

Hosted by Friends of Parker River National Wildlife Refuge along with the refuge staff, this event will be held at Refuge Lot #1. Over a span of six hours, you will have two engaging opportunities to contribute. You can choose between aiding in the annual fall beach cleanup or assisting with trail maintenance on the Hellcat Trail.

Our cleanup efforts will not only keep the beach beautiful but also make it safer and more enjoyable for everyone. Additionally, by working on trail maintenance, you will help to ensure the Hellcat Trail remains accessible and enjoyable as you learn the basics of refuge facility work!

Here’s what you need to know:

  • Registration: Kickstarts at 9:00 am at the parking Lot #1 Visitor Center platform. In case of rain, the indoor information office will serve as our meeting point.
  • What to Bring: Carry water, snacks, gloves, and ensure you’re dressed for the weather. For beach cleaning, bags will be provided, and trash grabbers are available. For trail maintenance, while you’re welcome to bring hand tools, landscaping tools will also be provided. Don’t forget your PPE – leather gloves, safety glasses, closed-toed footwear are crucial. Long sleeves and pants are recommended due to poison ivy, insects, and thorns.
  • Tasks: Beach cleaning participants will gather trash, leaving bags above the high tide mark for later pickup by Refuge staff. Trail maintenance volunteers will kickstart their day at Hellcat, led by Refuge Manager Matt Hillman, and coordinate with Lot #1 for further instructions till 1:00 pm.
  • Participation: Come at any time, work as long as you like, and feel free to bring along family and friends!

Let’s come together to preserve the beauty and accessibility of Parker River National Wildlife Refuge. Your efforts will go a long way in preparing the beach and trail for winter enjoyment by visitors and wildlife alike. For more details, check out the event on Facebook. We look forward to seeing you there and making a meaningful impact together!
